März">3. März</a> <a href="1885" title="1885">1885</a> ebenda) war ein US-amerikanischer Maler. Er ist bekannt für seine maßstabsgetreuen Aquarelle und Lithografien von Walfangschiffen sowie für seine Darstellungen des amerikanischen <a href="Walfang" title="Walfang">Walfangs</a> in Neuengland.<sup id="cite_ref-:0_1-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-:0-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Benjamin Russell wurde als Sohn einer wohlhabenden Familie in New Bedford, Massachusetts, geboren. Nach ersten Tätigkeiten als <a href="K%C3%BCfer" title="Küfer">Küfer</a> auf einem Walfangschiff begann er erst in seinen späten Dreißigern zu zeichnen und zu malen. Seine Erfahrungen auf See prägten seine spätere künstlerische Arbeit. Ab 1848 fertigte er Lithografien an und unterrichtete nach dem Ende des Amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs im Jahr 1865 Kunst in <a href="Rhode_Island" title="Rhode Island">Rhode Island</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-:0_1-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-:0-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Benjamin Russell Werke sind für ihre akkurate Darstellung von Walfangschiffen und Szenen der Walfangindustrie Neuenglands bekannt. Seine Werke galten als besonders naturgetreu und wurden deshalb eher zum Zweck der Dokumentation als aufgrund ihres künstlerischen Anspruchs geschätzt. Seine bekannteste Arbeit ist aber das gemeinsam mit <a href="Caleb_Purrington" title="Caleb Purrington">Caleb Purrington</a> (1812–1875) entstandene <a href="Moving_Panorama" title="Moving Panorama">Moving Panorama</a> <a href="Purrington_%26_Russell's_Original_Panorama_of_a_Whaling_Voyage_Round_the_World" class="mw-redirect" title="Purrington & Russell's Original Panorama of a Whaling Voyage Round the World">Purrington & Russell's Original Panorama of a Whaling Voyage Round the World</a>, das ab 1849 öffentlich ausgestellt bzw. aufgeführt wurde. Das Panorama ist rund 389 Meter lang und etwa 2,6 Meter hoch. Es wurde auf Leinwand beziehungsweise Baumwolltuch gemalt und als bewegtes Schaustück konzipiert. Es war auf Spulen montiert und wurde im Theaterbetrieb langsam abgewickelt, sodass sich dem Publikum eine fortlaufende Darstellung der Seereise bot.<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Ab Mitte der 1850er Jahre verdrängte die Fotografie seine bildlichen Dokumentationen nach und nach. Benjamin Russell arbeitete bis ins hohe Alter und schuf zahlreiche Aquarelle und Lithografien, die heute als Quellen für die amerikanische Walfanggeschichte von Bedeutung sind.<sup id="cite_ref-:0_1-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-:0-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
